Best Santiago Travel Deals

Arrived in Santiago after an overnight flight from Washington, DC. Wanted to both see the city and to get some exercise too. Wanted a guide to show the highlights on the first afternoon. Booked the reservation easily before leaving home via email. The folks at B.V. were very helpful and set up not only the city tour, but also arranged a guided car tour of the Valparaiso area as well.

Arrived a bit late to meet B.V. guide, an American ex-pat named Mac from Chattanooga!  The only ones on the tour along with a "rear-guard" B.V. asst. guide to protect the group in the city traffic. The drivers of Santiago are very careful and forgiving of the Green Bikes and there was no problem even in the evening rush hour.

To three hour tour went along the river Mapopo Parque and into the quiet , historic neighborhoods. Mac explained what we were seeing and even bought  all an ice cream cone in mid-tour...rest break. After that .. the city-center and the Presidential Palace, the Plaza de Armas, and commercial sections main avenidas. the center city is relatively flat so it was not a great effort to keep up. Did go to see some of the places where the "Time of the Generals" was prominent - note the Secret police HQ and the house they used to imprison those who were in opposition to their rule.

Recommend this B.V. approach to leaning the basics about any city...to get the "lay of th e land" before tackling touring alone, which was the plan the next day. The folks at Bicicleta Verde were very accomodating and knowledgeable and very concerned about safety.
